Coral tower
My passion for the sea continues to fuel my inspiration, giving rise to the Coral Tower: fragment of a Reef project. Through its shapes, textures, and colors, this work explores the richness of coral and the underwater world. Having been a diver for over 30 years, I wanted to pay tribute to these fascinating ecosystems, now threatened by climate change. Over the years, I have witnessed the gradual degradation of many dive sites, not only due to ocean warming, but also due to destructive practices such as overfishing, dynamite use, and even cyanide poisoning. Yet, to date, barely 2% of the oceans are protected as marine parks. It was from this awareness that the idea of creating a ceramic coral tower was born, symbolizing the fragility of these ecosystems. I applied a glaze evoking the phenomenon of coral bleaching, which slowly discolors and dooms them. Made of clay using the coil technique, this piece was aged using a skillful blend of glazes and a reduction firing in a gas kiln. The result is a work that appears to have been plucked straight from the ocean floor, like a fragile and ephemeral relic, a testament to the endangered beauty of coral reefs.
